How to resize images and reduce photo file size
Use minimage’s free image resizer to change pixel dimensions and save a JPEG, PNG or WebP. Your photos are processed on your device, without an account or image upload.
Resize a photo in four steps
- Choose an image or drop it into the tool. You can select up to 20 images, subject to the file and memory limits shown in the editor.
- Choose 25%, 50% or 75%, or enter a custom width or height in pixels. Leaving one dimension empty keeps the original for that limit. The tool preserves the original proportions.
- Select JPEG, PNG or WebP. For JPEG and WebP, adjust quality if you need a smaller file. PNG is lossless and ignores the quality setting.
- Choose Resize image, review the actual output dimensions and file size, then download. Your original file is unchanged.
Pixels and kilobytes measure different things
Pixel dimensions describe the width and height. Kilobytes describe how much data the file contains. File size also depends on the image’s detail, the format and the encoding quality. Resizing to 600 pixels does not guarantee a particular KB value.
To reduce file size, try smaller dimensions first, then a lower JPEG or WebP quality. Compare the downloaded result at its intended viewing size. The estimate is approximate; the result card shows the actual encoded size. minimage does not automatically target a fixed KB limit.
Choose an output format
| Format | Useful for | Check before saving |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG | Photographs and application portals that require JPEG | It does not retain transparency. Lower quality can introduce visible artifacts. |
| PNG | Transparent graphics, screenshots and sharp text | Lossless output can be larger than JPEG or WebP; the quality slider has no effect. |
| WebP | Web images and transparent graphics when the destination accepts WebP | Check format support at the site or application receiving the file. |
Why the result may not match both requested dimensions
Width and height define a bounding box. A 1200 × 800 photo resized into a 600 × 600 box becomes 600 × 400, keeping its 3:2 proportions. minimage does not crop or stretch photos. For exact passport-photo proportions, crop first in an image editor, then resize.
Document and application photos
Use the document-photo presets and official sources as starting points. Confirm the rules for your specific portal and application cycle, including file type, size, background and framing. A correctly sized file is not a guarantee of acceptance. minimage does not set print DPI or change backgrounds.
Privacy and metadata
Resizing takes place in a local browser worker. Image pixels, file names and metadata are not sent to a server by the image-processing tool. Export re-encodes the pixels and removes metadata, including location and camera details; retaining metadata is not offered. The privacy policy explains website hosting and the separate contact form.
Supported inputs and browser limits
The tool accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP and AVIF inputs. HEIC/HEIF works only when the browser can decode it; AVIF and HEIC output are not offered. It requires a browser with Web Workers, createImageBitmap and OffscreenCanvas encoding. Files are limited to 10 MB each, 50 MB per selection, 24 megapixels and 10,000 pixels per side. Browser codec and memory limits may reject an otherwise valid file.
